Water Break Causes Slick Road

Posted

While most Jackson residents were tucked warmly in their beds, the staff of the Jackson Water and Sewer Departments were out in the cold restoring service to the residents of South Jackson.

As temperatures dipped to 17 degrees on Tuesday night, a water leak near the intersection of Armory Drive and Hargis Street coated the end of Armory Drive with ice.

Crews were called to the leak shortly after 9:00 p.m. after a resident reported a large amount of water running down the street.

The water froze, making travel in the area dangerous.  Jackson Police Officers stationed near the scene slowed traffic as crews worked to correct what an area resident described as a “line separation.”

The leak was fixed, and water officials worked until after midnight to flush air from the lines as they refilled.

A boil water advisory was issued for the area, and salt was spread on the roadway a mile down Armory Drive near “the dip” to make the area safer.

Waterline breaks and separation are common during the winter months as soil freezes and contracts.  Report any unusual water flows to the water department as a possible leak.
