Eleven of twelve chihuahuas surrendered to Breathitt County Animal Control Officer Jamie Holbrook on March 19 have found new homes.
According to officials, a woman in South Jackson contacted city authorities and offered to surrender six adult chihuahuas and six puppies because she was unable to care for them.
Holbrook and Jackson Police Officer Daniel C. Turner took possession of the dogs from the address on Slayrean Goff Drive. The dogs were transported to the Kentucky River Animal Shelter.
On Tuesday, March 24, officials announced that eleven of the dogs had been adopted from the shelter and now have new owners.
“This is a much better alternative,” Holbrook said. “Following the legal process is much better than abandoning the dogs beside the roadway or dropping them off to fend for themselves.”
One dog remains at the shelter, but officials believe that it will find a new home soon.
“This is the positive ending that we hope for in every case,” Holbrook said. “It is good to see responsible pet owners who care about their animals and want to ensure they are healthy and happy.”
