Shaw Injured in Truck-Moped Crash

Posted

A Jackson man remains in a Lexington hospital following a serious accident on Alpine Hill on May 27.

Charles Allen Shaw, 27, of Railroad Street, was transported to the Kentucky River Medical Center with serious injuries after he was hit from behind by a truck near the intersection of Highway 15 South and Roark Ridge Road.

The first calls received reported that a man was lying in the roadway on Alpine Hill.

Subsequent calls to 911 reported that the male in the roadway had been hit by a vehicle.

Officers from the Jackson Police Department and the Kentucky State Police responded to the scene and located Shaw lying on his back on the side of the roadway after a driver helped move him out of the road to prevent another collision.

According to reports, Shaw was traveling south on Highway 15 while riding a 2022 Boom Scooter shortly after 9:35 Wednesday night when he was struck from behind by a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by Brandon Donnie Turner, 19, of Pine Grove Road in Jackson.

Reports indicate that Turner’s truck hit Shaw “about ¾ of the way up the hill” in the 1400 block of Highway 15 South.  The collision reportedly knocked Shaw more than 108 feet into the roadway.  Shaw's scooter became wedged in the grill of Turner’s truck.

Turner reportedly “pushed the moped another 1,245 feet” up the hill, and before he stopped his truck near the entrance to the Jackson Village Shopping Center.

Emergency medical personnel from the Breathitt-Wolfe Ambulance Service responded to the scene and transported Shaw to the Kentucky River Medical Center, where he was treated for multiple injuries.

Shaw’s mother, Pauline White, reported that her son suffered a broken hip, back, leg, and multiple bones, as well as some severe “road rash” during the incident.  She also reported that he had undergone multiple surgeries in his first days at the University of Kentucky hospital.

White told family and friends that “Allen has a long way to go.”

At the scene of the crash, officers administered field sobriety tests to Turner, who passed each exam.  Officials do not believe that alcohol or drugs were involved, but believe “inattention” played a role in the crash after Turner said he did not see the moped.

Shaw’s crumpled Moped was removed from the scene by Mack’s R & J Towing.  Turner was able to drive his vehicle from the scene.

The accident is under investigation by JPD Officer Tim Chandler.
