Breathitt High School Principal Daphne Noble issued a statement on Wednesday, January 21, after a prop knife was located at Breathitt High School.
According to the safety alert issued to parents and guardians, a student located and reported “an old, rusty knife” on the theatre stage in the P.E. Gym.
School administrators contacted law enforcement, who investigated the discovery and determined that no threat was ever made or existed.
According to the report, the “knife was with other props from a student play from many years ago.” Officers determined that it was “not brought to school by any current student.”
“We appreciate student diligence in reporting safety issues that might arise,” Noble stated in the release. “It is important for our students to feel comfortable in reporting any situation that might compromise student safety.”
She expressed her appreciation to “students, parents, and the school community for supporting our efforts to ensure school safety.”
The knife was removed by law enforcement.
In a separate incident, a pocket knife was taken from a student by law enforcement officials at Sebastian Elementary School on January 14. Principal Jeremy Hall notified parents and guardians in a safety letter, but no threats were made or reported.
