New Rails for Jackson

Posted

Drivers on Main Street will notice a change as they climb the hill toward the Courthouse.

A new aluminum handrail has been installed along a section of sidewalk near the former Scoopy Doo building and the Breathitt County Extension Office.

The best part is that the railing cost the city nothing for materials, and the only expense was labor.

Workmen from Iron Bear Fabrications, a Jackson-based company, removed sections of the old handrail on Friday after officials noticed it had rusted near the base and was unstable in some areas.

Owner Leslie “Bear” Noble began installing the replacement handrails on Friday, and his crew, which included Clell Watts and Jaylon Hollon, finished the work Sunday afternoon.

Noble said his company replaced more than 214 feet of railing left over from previous jobs around the city of Jackson.  Similar aluminum railing was used on lower Highland Avenue and at Jackson City School for school walkway projects.

Iron Bear Fabrications specializes in garbage bins, handrails, and other custom metal builds.

The new railing improves safety along Main Street and replaces hundreds of feet of rusted and unstable single rail that had been in place since the 1950s, according to one source.

The new railing features a two-rung system and is expected to last 30 to 50 years.
