About thirty Breathitt County residents gathered on the lawn of the Breathitt County Courthouse on Thursday, May 7, for the annual observance of the National Day of Prayer.
The crowd joined hands and was led in prayer by local minister Phil Swartzentruber, who prayed for the leaders of our city, county, and country.
Those gathered also broke into smaller groups for brief prayer sessions.
The gathering included representatives from churches, schools, and religious organizations from across the area and from several denominations.
Members of the Jackson Police Department assisted the group by controlling traffic on Main Street and slowing traffic during the prayer service.
The gathering continued the Breathitt County tradition of observing the National Day of Prayer on the first Thursday of May at the county seat of government.
The National Day of Prayer was instituted by a joint resolution of Congress in 1952. President Ronald Reagan signed legislation in 1988 that set the date to the first Thursday of May each year.
The 2026 theme was “Glorify God Among the Nations - Seeking Him in All Generations.”
The Breathitt County observance lasted for twenty-five minutes and allowed those gathered to pray for loved ones, those in need, and the nation.
