Monday Night Fire Banjaxes Kragon Home

Posted

A late evening fire ripped through and destroyed a single-family mobile home in the Kragon Stretch.

Fire crews from the Quicksand Fire Department responded to a report of flames coming from the window of a single-wide after a driver passed by the home at 5795 Highway 15 South at 10:52 p.m.

The caller reported to E911 in Hazard that smoke was coming from the end of the structure closest to the roadway.

Breathitt County Emergency Management Director Dylan Baker requested that the Jackson and Watts-Caney Fire Departments respond to the scene for mutual aid after no response was reported from Quicksand.

Breathitt County Constable Ronnie Begley and Sgt. Fred Neace from the Jackson Police Department responded to the fire to ensure that the home was empty.

When the officers arrived, the fire had spread throughout the entire structure.  Fire crews from Jackson and Watts-Caney arrived and extinguished the blaze after Kentucky Power removed a downed power line, allowing firefighters to gain access to the front of the home.

No one was at home at the time of the fire.  According to PVA office records, the owner of the property was listed as the late Mary L. Combs.

Fire crews remained on the scene for more than an hour, and no injuries were reported.
