Local Donations Support Animal Shelter

Posted

The cold weather moving into the mountains on Saturday was the main focus of most residents, but an urgent call from the Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter was answered by some local heroes.

According to a press release from the animal shelter in Hazard, a phone call went out to Breathitt County Animal Control Officer Jamie Holbrook on the morning of January 23, “regarding our concerns about maintaining heat and water” at the Perry County facility used by Breathitt County.

Animal shelter workers feared that the common snow and ice would cause the center to lose power, and the animals would suffer as a result.

Holbrook, County Judge Jeff Noble, Mayor Laura Thomas, Kentucky River Medical Center, and others sprang into action, delivering generators, heaters, and much-needed supplies thanks to several donations.

“We are definitely feeling the support today,” the shelter posted on its social media accounts.  “This incoming weather has had us a nervous wreck.”

According to the release, Holbrook “worked diligently throughout the day by contacting officials and local resources, and delivering the donations to the shelter.”
