KSP Investigates Shooting That Killed One

Posted

Detectives from Post 13 in Hazard were called to the scene of a shooting on Wednesday, November 5, in the Gross Valley community that killed a sixty-seven-year-old Breathitt County man.

Law enforcement and medical officials responded to the report of a “self-inflicted gunshot wound” at 7843 Highway 541 shortly after 8:30 p.m.

At the scene, officials located Edward A. Jewell on the floor of the living room of the home with a single wound to the head.  He was transported by Breathitt-Wolfe Ambulance Service to a landing zone at the First Church of God and transferred by helicopter to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment.

Jewell died at the UK Hospital on Saturday, November 8, from the effects of the wound.

According to dispatch records, Jewell’s caretaker called 911 and reported that his grandfather walked into the living room of the home and shot himself in front of him with a .32 caliber handgun.

Detectives were called to the scene to review the information as a standard practice.

Edward Anthony Jewell was born in Waukegan, Illinois, to Edward and Lillian Mae (Ritchie) Jewell, who preceded him in death.

He was an ardent supporter of Child Quest, Child Watch, Parents Without Partners, and many other community support organizations.  Jewell also supported several head injury victims’ support groups after he was severely injured in an automobile accident, which forced his withdrawal from the University of Kentucky Medical School.

In 1973, Edward Jewell was recognized for his bravery and named an honorary Kentucky Colonel at the age of 15 for rescuing several children being swept away in a school bus by floodwaters.

A memorial service for Jewell is scheduled for November 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Breathitt Funeral Home.
