Frontier Gas Company has asked the Kentucky Public Service Commission for an increase that would increase the monthly base rate by 92% and the average monthly bill by $11.50.
Postcards from the Frontier Gas Company began arriving in mailboxes this week, announcing the February 3, 2026, Public Service Commission hearing on the proposed rates.
The hearing will be held next Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. in Frankfort, but can be viewed online at psc.ky.gov.
The hearing is scheduled to allow the cross-examination of witnesses.
Customers can make comments at the beginning of the hearing by following the instructions on the Public Service Commission’s website.
The request for a rate increase was on August 18, 2025, and the company asked for an “alternative rate adjustment” or “other general relief.”
The request was filed by L. Allyson Honaker, the company’s attorney from Lexington, and indicated that the increase was needed to “continue to provide safe and reliable service to its customers and to collect a fair, just and reasonable rate for that service.”
Honaker indicated that the Commission approved the last rate adjustment in June 2017. Supporting documentation presented to the Commission reported that the company had 4,703 customers and experienced a “significant financial loss” in 2024. The financial reports indicated that Frontier Gas Company, LLC, based in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, lost $524,317.01 in 2024.
According to the company’s filings, if the rate increase is approved by the Public Service Commission, the residential and commercial base rate would go from $13.00 per month to $25.00, an increase of $12.00 or 92%.
The average monthly cost would rise from $34.83 to $46.32 or an increase of $11.50 (33%).
The rate per CCF (centum cubic feet used) would jump to .416492, up from the current base rate of .42200.
In exchange for the rate increase, Frontier Gas Company has proposed dropping the $1 per month meter-reading fee and reducing the monthly pipeline replacement fee from $5.00 to $2.50 per month.
Customers or anyone interested in Frontier Gas Company’s request can watch and comment on the proposed rate increase on February 3, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. by visiting psc.ky.gov. The case number is 2025-00277.
