Trooper Dawson Duff found himself in the middle of a “romantic situation” last Monday after being called to the disturbance on Big Branch of South Fork.
Duff was called to a home at 725 Big Branch South Fork Road at 1:46 p.m. on January 4 after a 911 call reported an irate woman making threats after she allegedly broke a window out of a home.
Anthony Stewart told officials that his ex-girlfriend, Anastasia McCormick, 39, of Richmond, showed up at the residence and started yelling and trying numerous times to get inside the residence. Stewart and Michelle Mounts were inside the residence and witnessed McCormick “bust out the front right window” before she fled from the scene.
Following a quick search of the area, Duff and Trooper Dennis Turner located McCormick in the woods near the home. She told officials that she had gotten scared when police arrived and that she did not want to go to jail.
During a subsequent interview, Mounts and Stewart told troopers that they feared McCormick would harm them and that she had allegedly threatened to “burn down the house.” McCormick later confirmed the statements.
Trooper Duff arrested McCormick, and she was transported to the Kentucky River Regional Jail in Hazard.
McCormick was charged with one count of Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, Menacing, and Terroristic Threatening.
She appeared in Breathitt District Court on January 8, 2026, and pleaded guilty to the charges.
Judge Gary Salyers sentenced McCormick to 94 days on each of the counts and credited her with four days served on each charge.
