Ernest Finley, 96, of Jackson, Kentucky, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at the Kentucky River Medical Center in Jackson. Born on March 30, 1929 in Breathitt County, Kentucky, Ernest lived a long and fulfilling life rooted in family, hard work, and cherished traditions.

Ernest dedicated much of his career to serving the community through various roles. He worked at the Jaxon Theatre until it tragically burned down and later contributed his skills to Jackson TV Service, Breathitt TV Service, and Charter Cable. His commitment to his work was unwavering; he retired from the City of Jackson at the remarkable age of 88. Ernest’s work ethic and dedication left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Family was at the heart of Ernest’s life. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 70 years, Annie Marie Robinson Finley. Together, they built a legacy of love and resilience that continues through their surviving family: son, Charles (Faye) Finley; daughter, Debra (Gerald) Fletcher; grandchildren, Thea Neace-Smith, Natasha Jones, Jesse Barnett and Arica Finley; and great-grandchildren Jeffrey, Landon, Lucas, Ethan, Zoey, Katherine and Stella. Ernest was also predeceased by his parents, Dan and Mandy Reynolds Finley; sons, Donald, Gary, and Danny Finley; brothers, Bruce Spicer, Roy Spicer, Linville Finley, Luther Finley, Willie Garrett, Chester Garrett, James Garrett, Lee Finley; and sisters, Ellen Smith, Hazel Garrett, Elizabeth Hudson, Lillie Stevens, and Jean Solis.

Ernest found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved spending time with his family above all else. His storytelling captivated those around him as he shared memories and tales that reflected his wisdom and humor. Fishing provided him with moments of peace and connection to nature. In quieter times at home, he enjoyed watching westerns—a pastime that brought him comfort and nostalgia.

Visitation for Ernest will be held Friday, February 27, 2026 at the Breathitt Funeral Home Chapel from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM with his funeral service to be held Saturday, February 28, at 12:00 PM with Buddy Johnson and Ralph Cundiff in charge of the services. 

Burial will follow in the Jackson Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Ernest’s life was a testament to perseverance and devotion. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his stories continue to inspire laughter and warmth for generations to come.
