The cold winter weather is not helping with the planned installation of a new set of playground equipment at Douthitt Park.
Mayor Laura Thomas announced at a recent meeting of the Jackson City Council that the Playground Project at Douthitt Park was moving forward and that the demolition of the old playground had been completed to make way for the new.
“It will take a while,” Thomas said. “It will take us some time to schedule the installation with the company.”
The “small playground” was damaged during the 2022 flooding at the park, and the city looked for ways to replace the much-used children's center. The help came from two local partners.
The Kentucky River Medical Center and Jackson Kiwanis Club made “sizeable donations” to the project and helped finance the replacement equipment.
“We look forward to seeing the playground installed and being used,” Thomas said.
A truck delivered the crate of new equipment to Douthitt Park on December 19. No scheduled installation date has been announced.
Mayor Laura Thomas informed Council members that the park was also working to replace the equipment at the “large playground” adjacent to the smaller one.
According to Thomas, the city will utilize Land and Water Conservation Grant funding to complete that portion of the project when funds are released by the National Park Service in Washington, D.C.
No timeline has been established for that work to begin.
