Accident Blocks Highway 1110

Posted

Highway 1110 at Haddix was blocked for nearly two hours on Wednesday, January 21, after a minor accident.

No injuries were reported, but traffic was stopped and rerouted while an official waited for a heavy-duty wrecker to arrive and help set things right.

According to police reports, an eighteen-wheeler hauling pile-driving equipment and pieces of heavy equipment left the roadway at 4:13 p.m., approximately 1.7 miles up Highway 1110 from Highway 15 near the Haddix Cemetery after meeting another commercial vehicle.

The driver told the official he swerved to avoid a fast-moving delivery vehicle that crossed the center line, then dropped off the edge of the roadway and became stuck in a deep drainage culvert.

The vehicle, owned by Pit Viper Construction, “grounded out” the rear axles of the trailer and ended up perched precariously in the ditch.  The trailer did not tip over as was feared.  The stuck truck required assistance to extricate itself from the ditch.

Drivers on the heavily traveled roadway were rerouted back to Jackson and out Highway 397 to Highway 1110 near Dry Bread Hill by the Breathitt County Sheriff’s Office and the Kentucky Department of Transportation.

A truck from Walkertown Towing from Hazard quickly pulled the truck back into the roadway, and crews reset the equipment before reopening the roadway at approximately 5:40 p.m.

Investigators were looking for the commercial vehicle that the driver said ran him off the roadway.
